Do you find yourself walking through life with your head down and watching your feet move forward? Left, right, left right, left right. If so, you are missing out on the wonder all around you. Look up! Look around!
I often find myself looking at the ground as I walk. I supposed I do so to avoid tripping and falling. My fear of doing so keeps me focused on where I place my feet.
My eyes were opened to this fact a few weeks ago as I walked on the road near my home. I was…again…looking down. The roads where I live are uneven and filled with potholes.
The fact that I, indeed, was looking down caused me to see a message written on the road. It said, “Look up.”
I almost walked by the message before the words sunk into my head. I turned around and took a step or two back, so I stood just beside the painted words.
Then I did as instructed. I looked up.
It was a sunny day, and, oh my! I saw the sun rays streaming through a gorgeous and gigantic redwood tree. Wow.
No wonder someone thought to inspire passersby to stop and adjust their vision toward the sky.
Had I just kept walking and staring at the pavement, I would have missed the experience of grandeur and beauty around and above me. But the message widened my focus and forced me to become present in the moment.
What are you missing as you move through life with your head down and blinders on? And when do you shift your vision downward, causing you to miss the things happening all around you?
Find out by lifting your eyes and allowing yourself to scan the wondrous world around you. What do you see?
Go for a walk today and keep your eyes up and open. Be present in the moment. Consciously scan for beauty and things that catch your interest.
When you finish your walk, tell me what you saw. I’d love to know.
