The path to becoming your best self isn’t an easy one.
Why?
Because it requires you to step back and get honest.
Totally honest.
And with your toughest critic, too.
Yourself.
Becoming your best self is a transformation into the person you were born to be. In every moment of every day, you have the choice of being whoever you want to be. You determine the actions you take, the path you walk, the way you see the world, and that choice defines you.
3 Keys to Becoming Your Best Self
So how do you create that transformation? Here are the three keys to becoming your best self.
Step One—Set the Bar
You can’t become the person you WANT to be—your BEST self—if you don’t define it.
Step one is all about developing that definition…that expectation.
Who do you want to become?
Answer that question honestly so there’s no margin for error or misinterpretation. State it in simple, unmistakable terms that you only can interpret one way.
Accomplishing a goal starts with setting one.
Step Two—State the Reality
Now that you know who you want to become, what your best self looks like, start examining what road map to getting there. What is it going to take to transform into that person?
What sacrifices will you need to make?
What weaknesses will you need to strengthen?
What talents will you need to tap into?
When you’ve compiled your list, use it to craft an action—the steps you need to start taking on a daily basis to achieve your very best self.
Step Three—Walk into Thunderdome
Now comes the scary part…
You need to execute your plan.
Start living life as the person you want to become—your best self.
If your best self is more loving, make a conscious effort every single day to demonstrate that you care.
If your best self is more decisive, always keep a coin on-hand and when a choice presents itself, define two outcomes. If both outcomes seem attractive, flip the coin. Commit to whichever outcome chance leaves you with.
If your best self is healthier, create a plan that allows you to go for a walk every day or eat more nutritious meals.
Don’t say “I wish that I could…”
Like Nike says, Just do it! Just be that person.
Yes, you’ll hit setbacks, but don’t be deterred. Fake it until you make it if you must!
Step Three and a Half—Journal
Journaling isn’t one of the true “steps” in this process, but it does help, so it’s worth mentioning here.
When you journal, you stare down the barrel of your reality.
You face the facts head-on as you reflect on your progress and catalog it.
And that action can prove monumentally impactful. Your ability to openly reference a “Report Card” helps you hold yourself accountable.
Are you becoming the person you want to be? A quick glimpse at the last few entries in your journal reveal the answer.
Stay the course
The journey to becoming your best self isn’t easy, and it isn’t expedient, but it IS DOABLE.
If you trust in yourself—and you trust in the processes outlined above—I promise you’ll experience the transformation you desire.
