Here in Northern California it does not feel like spring. It’s 40 degrees and rainy. However, it’s April and the lilies and daffodils are blooming, so I know spring has sprung.
So, it’s appropriate that the next seder symbol I’m going to look at is karpas, the green vegetables that remind the seder participants that Passover corresponds with spring and the harvest. Anyone can think about karpas and the questions it brings to mind.
- What will I grow or what am I trying to grow in my life?
- How am I fertilizing the seedlings or plants?
- Are I weeding my garden and watering it?
- Am I tending my garden and spending time nurturing the things I am trying to grow?
- Did I plan my garden, carefully choosing the seeds and where they needed to be placed, putting those that need sun in the right location and those that need shade in the right location as well?
These are really great questions. If you are like me, stopping to think about them will show you some important things…like where you are putting your time and attention.
I discovered that, despite what I thought, I’m really not caring for the plants I’m trying to grow. I’ve been putting tons of time and attention into planting or fertilizing plants I thought I wanted in my garden, but they really don’t belong there and they are creating shade that doesn’t allow the plans I really want to grow. Or they are simply overtaking my garden and leaving no room for the original plants to flourish.
Wow. That was an eye opener. Time to weed that garden big time and to fertilize and water the plants I really want to have growing in my life.
How about you? What do you want your garden to look like? Is it growing the way you’d like? Is it producing the flowers you desire?
