The other day while I was at the gym exercising I listened to Lee Ann Womack’s song “I Hope You Dance.” I’ve always loved the message in this song, and as I sang along I thought about the lyrics.
If you don’t know them, here they are:
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat, but always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty-handedI hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give fate the fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you danceI hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances, but they’re worth taking
Loving might be a mistake, but it’s worth making
Don’t let some hell-bent heart leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out reconsider
Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you danceI hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens
Promise me that you’ll give fate the fighting chance
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
Watch the video below, and listen to the song. Then ask yourself one question: How often do you sit it out rather than dance?
And don’t take the word “dance” literally. You can substitute “dance” for “live, go for it, take a chance, stretch,” or any other word that mean that you are dancing through life—living to the fullest and enjoying the process.
So, when given the chance—or the choice, do you sit it out or dance? I hope you dance.
