How Desire Conflicts Make it Difficult to Create More

Desire conflicts prevent you from creating what you want

Too much of anything can result in negative consequences. That’s why many people wish, strive, and dream for more while, at the same time, fearing that kind of abundance.

It’s no wonder, therefore, that they don’t create more of what they desire. They have a “desire conflict.”

They want more, but they don’t want more because of its potential negative ramifications.

Rain, Please!

I began thinking about the plight of “more-not-more” desire conflict over the past few weeks when New Mexico experienced large amounts of monsoon rain.

The state has been in drought for 24 years. Climate studies show that the period from 2000 onward marks the driest two-decade stretch in the American Southwest in at least 1,200 years.

Most New Mexicans want rain. Many of us listen to the nightly weather report and hope the occasional 15% chance of rain predicted will come to pass.

This past summer was no different, except it also was the warmest summer on record for New Mexico by a wide margin. Indeed, it was super hot and dry for months in the Albuquerque area. (Other areas of the state did receive some rain during the summer.)

And then, the third week of September, the skies opened up over our home just north of Albuquerque. All night we listened to thunder and lightning and the pounding sound of monsoon rains on our roof and skylights—even though monsoon season was just about over.

The next week, we had more rain. And the week after, even more.

I felt grateful for all that rain…more than I could have imagined…coming so late in the monsoon season.

Too Much, Too Fast

The morning after the torrential monsoon rains, we sprung a leak in our kitchen. We had a new roof installed four years ago, so we were quite surprised.

The next week I discovered a large leak in my office. (Luckily, it missed my computer!)

We weren’t the only ones. When I called my contractor, he said he’d received 14 calls from clients with roof leaks—some with old ones and others with new ones.

That’s what happens during a historic late-monsoon deluge.

Albuquerque received 4.51 inches of rain at the official International Sunport tracking station, with surrounding areas picking up even higher localized amounts of 4 to 8 inches during that period. Virtually all of this precipitation fell during an unprecedented two-week stretch of back-to-back storm systems between September 17 and September 30, 2026. This window shattered records as the wettest September in Albuquerque’s history and its wettest single month overall since November 1905.

New Mexican’s definitely had their wishes fulfilled. They received rain.

But the amount of rain was too much, too fast, which created problems.

Many residents and businesses had roof issues, and communities also faced washed-out roads, erosion, and flooding. In southern New Mexico, the McLeod Dam neared total collapse after floodwaters overtopped it, forcing the emergency evacuation of five communities. Rincon suffered an active levee breach. Plus, the rains completely drowned crop fields during the crucial red chile harvest in Hatch Valley.

Your Subconscious Fears About “More”

The scenario I described, which did happen, is what we subconsciously fear. We want what we want…and we want more of it. We also know if we get too much of what we want, especially too fast, we might not be able to handle it.

We realize the circumstances could go from good to bad very quickly if we get too much of what we desire.

That means we want it, and we want more of it, but we are afraid to receive what we say we want. As a result, we block ourselves from receiving what we desire.

We have a “desire conflict.” We want and don’t want at the same time.

Desire Conflicts Keep You Wanting More

Desire conflicts keep you wanting more. Whenever you feel you want or need more, you are also aware that you don’t have what you want. That puts you into a state of lack.

It’s difficult to create what you want from a state of lack. Your vibration comes from lack, and you continually communicate to yourself, others, and the Universe that you don’t have what you want. Thus, you attempt to create more from a place of not having more.

On top of that, your subconscious fears block the creation of what you want. Fear is powerful, and it typically creates what we don’t want rather than what we do.

Your vibration comes from lack and fear. And your message to the Universe is confused at best—“I want it, but I don’t want it,” and “I don’t have it, and I’m afraid to have it.”

It’s no wonder you don’t create what you want.

How You Block Receiving More Money

Let’s look at a different example. Maybe you want more money, but subconsciously you fear you can’t handle more money.

You may recall that lottery winners who win a large amount of money typically spend or lose it within three to five years. As the theories go, these people’s previous inability to accumulate and manage wealth made them ill-equipped to retain their winnings.

Additionally, their identity has revolved around being people who aren’t good with money or don’t have wealth. That identity stays the same even when they win the lottery. Thus, their mindset and habits, which are aligned with their old identity, cause them to quickly lose the money.

Even if you aren’t aware, your mental chatter says, “I need more money” and “I want more money.” It also says, “You aren’t good at managing money,” and “You aren’t the type of person who will ever be rich.”

So, you desire money, but you also desire not to have money. And your identity remains that of someone who doesn’t have money.

The state of not having money is known, and, therefore, feels safe and comfortable. So you vibrate at the level of safety and comfort—and tell the Universe you want to keep experiencing the safe, comfortable circumstance of not having enough money. This can be true even though your situation is unsafe and uncomfortable.

Ultimately, your desire conflict keeps you wanting more but being unable to create more.

Get Clear About What “More” Looks Like

The key to stop wanting more (and having more instead) revolves around getting clear about what “more” looks like. How much more do you want, and how much more will you feel comfortable having?

After the initial deluge, I told my husband, “I wish we would have several days of steady rain…nothing damaging.” I had clarity on what I wanted: more rain in a form that would be beneficial, and not so much that we would experience issues, like leaks.

What does more money look like to you? Is it a 20% raise in salary? Is it becoming a millionaire overnight? Is it simply enough money to pay all your bills every month?

If you want more in some other area of your life, what does that look like to you? Get specific.

And what does having more feel like? What benefits will you derive when you have more?

Connect with the feeling of having more. When you become clear about how it will feel…and can feel those emotions…you begin sending out a clearer message to the Universe.

Ultimately, when we want anything, we are seeking the emotion attached to having that thing. The “thing” is just the vehicle for the feeling.

Stretch Beyond Your Comfort Zone

Now, try to stretch a little past your comfort zone. Not too much, too fast, but ask for a little more.

What would a little more look like? What would having that feel like?

Notice what comes up for you. Are you beginning to feel afraid or get a stream of negative mental chatter? Do all sorts of negative consequences or scenarios flood your mind?

Do you feel unworthy of that much more? Do you feel undeserving?

These subconscious thoughts and feelings can keep you from creating more.

But you can see the benefit of having just a bit more than what you said you wanted. Can you feel good about having a bit more? Do you feel worthy and deserving? Are you willing to step out of your current comfort zone (even if it feels uncomfortable) and receive more than you initially said you wanted?

If so, good! You can now put your attention and energy toward creating that amount more in any area of your life.

And you will find it easier to create that amount more because your energy is aligned with that, you have clarity, and you are telling the Universe clearly what you desire. Plus, you have eliminated some desire conflicts, which helps you create what you want.
