Some people don’t believe in the Law of Attraction. Other people swear it helps them attract their desires. Whatever camp you fall into, this universal principle offers lessons that can enhance your personal growth.
An understanding of the Law of Attraction can help you step into your best self, achieve your potential, and reach your goals. In fact, if one of your desires is to change personally, couple your personal growth efforts with the basic principles of the Law of Attraction to get the personal growth results you want faster and with more ease.
What is Personal Growth?
Personal growth is the result of personal development. Personal development is any investment of time or effort you make in yourself that improves your awareness, identity, talents, skills, mental state, emotional state, physical state, relationships, or ability to achieve fulfillment and joy in life. It’s also anything you do to become the type of person who can succeed in life arenas most important to you.
Personal growth is about personal change. To change your behavior, mindset, health, results, or characteristics, as well as your ability to achieve success in any endeavor, you must focus on your personal development. The more you work on yourself in an attempt to become the best version of yourself and realize your potential, the more you grow as a person and increase your ability to succeed.
You can pursue personal development with the help of a coach, in a class, applying what you learn from books, or in some other manner. But the goal remains the same: improve yourself.
And the result remains the same as well: personal growth.
What is the Law of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction works on the principle that the attractive, magnetic power of the Universe draws similar energies together. You may have heard of this described as “like attracts like.”
When I first learned about the Law of Attraction, it was explained to me this way: What you focus on expands. In other words, you attract into your life more of whatever you focus your mind (thoughts) on consistently.
Indeed, many define the Law of Attraction as the belief that positive thoughts attract positive outcomes, while negative thoughts attract negative outcomes.
I also was taught that where your attention goes, energy flows. And if you put your attention on something you want, you’ll attract it to you. On the other hand, if you put your attention on something you don’t want, you’ll attract that, too.
The Importance of Your Thoughts
The Law of Attraction revolves around the principle that thoughts are attractive or creative in nature. Thus, it’s essential to manage your thoughts.
Of course, you don’t always know what you are thinking about. According to the National Science Foundation, you think between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts daily. Eighty percent of those thoughts are negative; 95% are repetitive. Therefore, if you are like the average human, you think negative thoughts more often than positive ones.
That doesn’t bode well for attracting what you want. (It’s great for attracting what you don’t want, though.)
If you can learn to focus on the positive things in your life or that you want to experience, you can begin to consciously attract more good and positive things. The reverse remains true as well. Focus on lack and negativity, and that is what you will attract into your life.
Let’s relate this to your desire for personal growth. If you focus on who you want to become—knowledgeable, prosperous, lovable, or skillful, for instance—you will become that. If you continually focus on who you are not or on who you believe you are right now—stupid, in debt, unloveable, or lacking in skill—that is who you will become or remain.
The Law of Attraction and Personal Growth
On his website, New York Times bestselling author Jack Canfield says that understanding the Law of Attraction is a fundamental key to your success. “If you want to change your life, and empower yourself to create an amazing future, then you need to understand your role in the Law of Attraction.”
Your role is to:
- get clear about what you want—in this case, who you want to become
- generate positive feelings—do whatever you can to feel good
- imagine what it would be like to be that person—visualize yourself as the person you want to be
- Act “as if” you are that person—behave in a manner befitting the person you want to be
The First Area of Improvement
Your thoughts are the first area of improvement addressed by most personal growth programs. And, according to the Law of Attraction, thoughts possess their own energy—an energy that has impact and is attractive and creative by nature.
Additionally, as I have implied, thoughts create emotions, which have energy as well—and attract like energy. Your emotions often affect your physical energy, too. And whatever type of mental, emotional, and physical energy you emit attracts things and experiences of similar energy.
Thus, you can see that learning to master your psychology, which includes your thoughts, beliefs, and mindset, can help you create what you want, change the results you get, and step into the best version of yourself. Doing this one thing can result in enormous personal change.
Clearly, even if you only believe your thoughts affect your results, the use of the Law of Attraction has huge potential for advancing your personal growth.
Make the Law of Attraction Work For You
The Law of Attraction works all the time…just like gravity. However, you can make it work for you in a variety of ways.
For example, you can:
- Change your behavior—You can choose to respond differently than you have in the past in specific situations.
- Change your mental focus or mindset—You can intentionally focus on what you want (rather than what you don’t want) or on thoughts that are positive rather than negative.
- Manage your emotional state—You can do more of what makes you feel good and think thoughts that fill you with gratitude, love, awe, or joy.
These types of choices impact your personal growth. After all, personal development typically involves attempts to change behavior, mindset, thoughts, and emotions.
Remember: The more you change, the more you grow.
4 Ways to Use the Law of Attention for Personal Growth
Through my work as a Certified High Performance Coach, I have discovered four ways to use the Law of Attraction for personal growth. If you apply these strategies to your personal development practice, you’ll see amazing results.
1. Increase Clarity
The clearer you are about who you want to be, the more likely you are to become that person. That means you need to go beyond “I want to be financially independent” or “I want to be fit and healthy.”
For the Law of Attraction to positively impact your personal growth efforts, you need to know precisely what you want.
For instance, the above desires might be voiced in this manner: “I want to clear $150,000 (after taxes) every year and be able to retire by age 35.” Or “I want to weigh 145 pounds, have the stamina to run a half marathon, and have a perfect annual physical by the end of the year.”
That’s clarity. With clarity, you know exactly on what to focus your thoughts. Your emotions and actions will follow suit, and the energetic Universe will respond in kind.
Gain clarity on who you need to be to have what you want. Do you need to be more confident, courageous, or skilled at your job? How will you become that person?
Try this: Choose a few words that describe the person you need or want to be. What qualities would you demonstrate if you already had what you want or were the person you would like to be? For example, maybe you would be bold, passionate, and energetic.
How can you demonstrate those qualities now? Can you do something that requires courage? Perhaps you can allow yourself to express your passion when you converse with friends, family, or coworkers. Or you can raise your energy with breathing exercises or movement before you start a task, attend a meeting, or enter a room.
When you live into your words every day, you grow personally. Day by day, you become that person. And the Universe responds by bringing you opportunities and experiences that align with the person you have become.
2. Generate Positive Energy
Your energy—mental, emotional, and physical—has to align with the person you want to become as well as with whatever you want to create in your life. Generate positive energy, and you will find more of what you want coming your way.
If you tend to focus on negative thoughts, which result in negative emotions and low physical energy, you need to train your mind, instead, on positive thoughts. As you do so, your mental energy will switch to a higher frequency.
In turn, this energy will help you attract what you want, whether that is an increase in finances, a healthier body, or more self-confidence.
There are many ways to generate positive energy. You can exercise or walk in nature. You can spend time playing with or petting your cat or dog. Additionally, you can dance or sing, do breathing exercises, or meditate.
What makes you feel good? Discover that, and you will discover your best tool for generating positive energy.
Everything is easier when you radiate positive energy. And good things are attracted to that type of energy like a magnet. So raise your energy before you focus on attempting any personal changes.
3. Visualize Your Results
Visualization has been proven to help CEOs, Olympic athletes, artists, and…well…just about everyone…achieve success. If you have clarity on who you want to become, generate positive energy, and visualize yourself being that person, you will find yourself changing faster than you thought possible.
Your mind doesn’t know the difference between a visualization and you doing or being what you visualize. For instance, athletes who monitored for muscle activity while visualizing themselves practicing or competing have been found to use their muscles even though they are sitting in a chair. The brain tells their bodies to respond as if they were, indeed, running or skiing. And the brain records the success they imagine, too.
Seeing yourself as the person you want to become works the same way. Your brain tells your body that you are that already. It tells your body to fire the muscles that activate better posture or to walk with purpose—if you want to be confident, for example. And it records that success—that way of being, which makes it easier for you to actually change when you try. Again, if you desire more confidence, you’ll find yourself standing and walking differently with less effort when visualization is a daily habit.
Every day, take a few moments first thing in the morning and right before you go to sleep to visualize yourself going through the day as the best version of yourself. See yourself interacting with others, handling tasks or situations, and showing up as the person you want to become. You’ll find it much easier to show up in that manner after doing so.
4. Take Action
While many Law of Attraction practitioners do not speak about action, it’s an essential part of the equation—especially when applying this law to personal growth.
Once you are clear on who you want to become, you’ve generated positive energy and visualize yourself being your best self, you must do things differently. You have to act as if you are already the person you want to become.
Every day, you have to take action that helps you become that person. You have to live into those words you chose to describe yourself by acting like that person…now.
The creation of new and supportive habits is typically emphasized by personal development programs. If you consistently act as if you are your best self, you develop the habit of being that person.
If you want to retire at 35, you might ask for a raise and then learn to invest the additional income so you can retire at that age. If you want to lose 15 pounds, you might hire a personal trainer and meet with that person three times per week. You also could hire a nutritionist who would give you a diet that will help with weight loss. If you want to feel more confident, you could see a therapist or work with a coach to develop higher self-esteem.
Something has to change for you to grow personally. After all, growth is a transformative process.
Increase Your Personal Growth Success
Try utilizing the Law of Attraction to speed up your personal growth efforts. Gain clarity about who you want to become. Focus on becoming that person. Increase your positive energy. Visualize your goals as achieved, and take new actions—the same ones you would take if you already were that person.
Do these things consistently. Make them habits—new ways of being.
Before you know it, you’ll have grown into the best version of yourself. And you’ll be well on your way to realizing your potential.

Hello,
Nice article. Interesting info from NSF about tens of thousands of thoughts per day!
From my own research, I certainly agree with much of what you’re saying in this post, and I think in general this is a good article on the Law of Attraction for those who know little about it.
Hoping you’re having a GREAT day!
