Do your habits support the achievement of your goals or the creation of your dreams? Do they help you fulfill your purpose or potential? If not, it’s time to develop needle-moving habits.
Habits are, well…habitual. You get stuck in a rut doing the same thing. And your current habits have helped you achieve whatever success you’ve achieved to date, but they probably won’t move you farther.
Imagine your driving a car, and no matter what you do, the speedometer needle—and the speed you move forward—remains stuck at 35 miles per hour. You want to go 55 miles per hour. But you are in the habit of driving 35, and you can’t get the gas peddle to go down farther. So the needle stays stuck, and you move forward at your accustomed speed.
The only way you’ll change your speed is to change something else.
Maybe you need to strengthen your leg muscles so you can push the gas peddle down harder.
Or maybe you need to practice driving 40 miles per hour for a few weeks, and then drive 45 miles per hour. Progress to 55, and watch the needle move in the process!
Maybe you haven’t had the car worked on for years, and you need to take the car in for a tune up. Or maybe the needle on the speedometer or the speedometer needs to be reset.
Possibly, you’ve been driving down the same road. The tires on your car settle into a rut every time, and that rut won’t allow your vehicle to travel faster. If you steer the car out of the ruts, you might find your speed changes—and moving forward faster becomes easier.
Any one of these things could move the speedometer needle. Your new way of behaving changes your results. And over time you develop a new habit that serves you better.
Eventually, you’ll need more new habits to help you move the needle again.
What needle-moving habits will you take on this week or this month?
